BOOK “Els castells no són de princeses” (Human towers aren’t for princesses) by Mireia Comas

After 3 years following the Minyons de Terrassa and other human-tower groups, including the Castellers de Barcelona, Castellers de Gràcia, Colla Jove de l’Hospitalet, Moixiganguers d’Igualada, Castellers de l’Alt Maresme, Matossers de Molins de Rei, Castellers de Sants, Castellers de Sitges, Colla Jove de Tarragona, Castellers de Terrassa, Colla Vella de Valls and Castellers de Vilafranca, photographer and “castellera” Mireia Comas decided to publish a book sharing her experience with human towers from a female perspective.

From a selection of 6,000 photos, she chose 20 for the book, which also features a prologue by author Sílvia Alcàntara.

“Els castells no són de princeses” is a book of photographs with a highly personal take on the world of human towers. When she was six years old and all of her friends were dressing up as princesses, Mireia Comas discovered a different type of castle. Towers that were about hard work, overcoming difficulty and working as a team, and which define the Catalan people, her people. Ever since, she has been intrinsically tied to this community.

“Els castells no són de princeses” is a collection of images from the point of view of that six-year-old girl, who over time has become a professional photographer. A woman who, with perseverance and passion, has followed human-tower groups in their day-to-day activities, portraying their rehearsals, victories, disappointments, blood, sweat, tears and, of course, the thousand-year-old tradition of Catalan culture.

Human towers were named UNESCO Intangible Heritage of Humanity in 2010.

On 25 October 2016, the Minyons de Terrassa completed a tres de deu amb folre i manilles (tower with ten levels of three individuals and a three-level base) in Barcelona’s Plaça Sant Jaume.

This was the first 10-level human tower ever seen in the city of Barcelona.
