Mireia Comas Photographer

I’m from Terrassa but I was born in Andorra la Vella on 11 December 1976.

Freelance photographer. I study photography at the Institut d’Estudis Fotogràfics de Catalunya and specialise in photojournalism and photo reporting.

As a “castellera” (member of a human tower), taking shots of human towers has been a constant in my work as a photographer. The photo “Petó casteller” (Tower kiss) is the fruit of this work.

> Professional activity

I have worked with many different companies and institutions: Editorial Teide, Editorial Barcanova, La Caixa Foundation, Catalan Ministry of the Environment and Housing, Catalan Meteorological Service, Catalan Water Agency, ADIGSA, Spanish Ministry of Public Works and Transport, and Masiva.

And my work has been published in many newspapers and magazines, including El País, La Vanguardia, El Periódico de Cataluña, El Mundo, Ara, Vilaweb, Revista Castells and Altair.

And I have published the book “Els castells no són de princeses” (Human towers aren’t for princesses), a book of photos with a highly personal view of the world of human towers.

> Awards
  • September 1997, first place in “El fet casteller” (Human tower building) photo contest organised by the National Youth Council of Catalonia.
  • July 2001, first place in “Todos somos diferentes” (We’re all different) photo contest organised by CIVILIA Civil Rights Foundation and the Spanish Ministry of Labour and Social Affairs.
  • July 2003, first place in “Fotografia de Mercats” (Market photography) photo contest organised by the Terrassa Mercat de la Independència Association.
  • January 2015, second place in Repsol human tower photo contest organised at La Nit de Castells de Valls.
> Grants
  • July 2001, grant from the University of Oviedo to attend “International Photography Couse” with Javier Bauluz. Gijón.
  • December 2001, grant from the Santa Maria de Albarracín Foundation to attend the “Seminar on photography and journalism” with Gervasio Sánchez. Albarracín.
> Exhibitions

My latest exhibitions have focused on human towers:

  • October 2015. “Dones castelleres” (Female tower builders), group travelling exhibition. Valls.
  • October 2016. “Fort” (Strong), group travelling exhibition on human towers. Valls.
